— CHAPTER TWELVE—

Passenger

Everything was soon arranged. The Wilsons were taking a train back to London Paddington from Bridgend Pen-y-bont on Thursday afternoon and staying in a hotel, everything laid on and paid for by the TV company, Gentle Grace-Line IT , who called while Lucy was ‘sick’ and were obviously as nice as they sounded. Nick said he hadn’t replied but couldn’t join them. He had ‘things on’which annoyed Lucy because nothing could be more special than this. Conall and Dean would head over to the South Bank after work, while their daughter stayed with Dean’s sister. And Lucy supposed that in the studio there would be all kinds of uncles, aunts and cousins umpteen times removed, although Dad didn’t seem keen to talk about them. She guessed Grandpa Samson might be there too but she didn’t like to raise Mum’s hopes in case he wasn’t.

‘Will you pack your nice lacy dress?’

‘As if.’

Lucy thought the people in Grandad’s organisation would be more likely to recruit a girl in flats and jeans who looked like she could run, climb and hide as required. She’d need lots of clips and a big Japanese-style comb so that her hair wouldn’t get in the way.

Hobo’s mum had offered them a lift to Bridgend Station. When she arrived, in a blue charity hoodie that said she loved someone with alopecia, Lucy smiled because she walked like Hobo, and smiled like him too. Stocky and freckled, she looked as if she worked out with weights. She lifted Mum and Dad’s case as if it was a handbag. Then, taking Lucy’s little scarlet one to fit in the boot, she joked, ‘How long are you staying, Lucy, till Christmas?’

It was just as well, Lucy thought, that no one really expected her to answer that, because she had no intention of returning to Ogmore. She was counting on Conall, who had a cool little spare bedroom, to understand.

The mums got talking about school but neither of them mentioned the missing students. They behaved like they’d been best friends forever and hugged when they said goodbye.

Soon the Wilsons were on the platform waiting for the 4:08 London train.

Thinking of everyone on the bus heading from school back into the village, Lucy sent Hobo a text:

Good day? Everything OK?
